WELCOME TO YOU AND ME
Jen Clay
April 20, 2019 - Jan 5, 2020 | Young At Art Museum / Contemporary Gallery
Welcome to You & Me is a site-specific exhibition by multidisciplinary artist, Jen Clay, completely transforming Young At Art Museum’s Contemporary Gallery into an imaginative world immersed with vivid textile works, digital mapped projections, and interactive soft sculptures. Before entering the gallery visitors are met with a claymation video surrounded by yellow textile sculpture growing on the exterior walls around the monitor. Inside the gallery yellow textiles take over the space by covering the floor, ceiling and walls. Suspended from the ceiling is a bright pink vortex that descends to the floor encouraging visitors to enter. Once inside, Clay’s original characters converse with viewers and ask them playful questions intended to evoke feelings and provoke thought as they try to escape their world. An interactive touch screen allows visitors to help the characters on their journey to make their way out of their world and into ours.
Jen Clay was voted “Best Emerging Artist” by the New Times of Broward and Palm Beach. She has conducted performances at museums and contemporary art venues throughout the United States including a recent performance at ICA in Miami and the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach in which she trained teen artists to perform inside her wearable works. Her short film, Schools, was accepted into Visionaria in Milan, Italy. She recently had a solo exhibition at Practice Gallery in Philadelphia. A sense of childhood friendliness is seen in all of her work such as Claymation with bright colors or the softness of sewn wearable works.
